What Happened to Mr Hepworth? tells the story of a teacher whose journey took him from the classroom into the criminal justice system, through remand, court proceedings and ultimately the difficult process of starting to rebuilding his life.
But this is about more than one person.
It is a story about what happens when the systems designed to protect, educate and deliver justice begin to break down — and what it takes to rebuild your life, your reputation and your sense of purpose when everything you knew is suddenly taken away.
Through one deeply personal journey, the book asks wider questions about how we treat people at their lowest point, what happens behind prison walls, and whether a person should ever be defined by the darkest chapter of their life.

“I had spent years standing beside young people at some of the most difficult moments of their lives, telling them that a mistake, an allegation or a bad chapter did not have to define their future. Then suddenly, I was the one whose life had changed. I was no longer standing at the school gates or sitting in a pastoral office — I was behind a prison door, watching the world I knew continue without me. But the story did not end inside those walls. In many ways, the harder journey began when I walked back outside them: rebuilding a reputation, rebuilding relationships, rebuilding faith and learning how to live again when the person who came out was not quite the same person who went in.”
